Groove Transformer is the fourth prototype developed as part of the Get Back project, created in collaboration with Pien den Hollander and Thunderboom Records. The prototype accompanies a human bass player with AI-generated drums using a Groove Transformer model. Instead of focusing only on sound, the system places strong emphasis on physical movement as part of the interaction. The form language deliberately avoids typical robotic or instrument-like aesthetics and instead uses inflatables and compressed air for exaggerated motion. A key feature is that the system moves before the generated sound is heard, similar to how a drummer’s body signals an upcoming hit. This makes timing and intention visible to the musician.
