Billie is an AI instrument developed in collaboration with Pien den Hollander and Thunderboom Records as part of the Get Back project. The human musician and the AI share the same keyboard and act on a single physical interface. A key feature is that the probability of the AI’s generated sequences is exposed, making uncertainty part of the interaction. The system was designed to produce playful, human-like behavior. Due to physical limitations, mainly speed, this behavior takes a different form. What creates a sense of connection instead is the constant physical interference: the AI is always trying to jam your fingers, forcing the musician to continuously adapt while playing.
